We have had enough people ask us to enable the "comments" feature that we decided to go for it. Comment to your heart's content, but remember what your mom always said: "If you can't say something nice, don't complain anonymously on someone else's blog" ... or something to that effect. We love alcohol.
To be perfectly honest, we mostly love drinking it... but creating cocktails is a close second. There are innumerable ways to combine delicious spirits with intriguing ingredients, and we could go on and on about mixing for hours if nobody stopped us. Some people are curious about the details, and are perfectly happy to listen to us ramble on about the virtues of stirring vs. shaking, or the difference between rum and cachaça, or which type of bitters we prefer in a Manhattan, and blah, blah, blah. However, since not everyone shares our booze-nerdiness (and usually just wants us to make the damn drink), we decided that we needed an outlet to discuss all of this stuff that goes into all of your drinks. Oh...and if you have a question about anything we post, come by Range and have a chat and a drink.

* What's the "Blood Bank" reference?
The centerpiece of the Range bar is our beautiful art-deco era refrigerator. It is a striking and stylish cylindrical appliance, which features five rotating shelves and a glass door, and we love it for both its function and its form. It also happens to be originally designed as a blood bank refrigerator. Above the door is a brass plate, which reads:

Jewett is a company that still produces blood storage refrigerators (as well as commercial beverage refrigerators), although they no longer make them as cool as ours is. We are still trying to determine the exact year it was made, but we have narrowed it down to between 1935-1950. We'll keep you updated.

hello there, i am a fellow bartender with a question about ice. how do i convince the owner of the bar i work at to get a better ice machine, ie a kold draft, we have some great products but i feel like they are being diluted to fast with the chip ice we have.
Good question. It's great when a bar offers different ice for different drinks, and I wish Range had that option.
Ask your boss to check out a place like Alembic. They treat their ice right.
You could also make a batch of larger cubes at home, then present one cocktail using your cubes and one using the bar's ice, and see what the owner thinks. It's a long shot, of course, but it might work. If you do, remember to use boiled, distilled water to make the cubes transparent. Makes for a better presentation.
